It had been a few years since I had been up to the Petrified Forest. In the past we have done overnight backpacking trips. This trip was focused more on the park I had not visited, primarily the Southern and Western ends. Before heading there I had come across a few blog post mentioning Devil's Playground. The focus of the trip was to try to source some of the few permits that are distributed weekly by the NPS. Along with that area I wanted to visit the easier to access points of interest throughout the Southern portion of the park. We used Holbrook as our launch pad for the few days of exploration we had planned.

A last minute trip to the Mogollon Rim to do the Cabin Loop. The loop is a summer time favorite and is always an enjoyable time. The potential for monsoon activity threatened us Saturday but we managed to escape dry. Since Phoenix was scolding hot the rim country was also plagued with temps in the 90's. We the exception of the heat the trip was successful. If you want to explore the cabin loop check out the photos below and then head over to hikearizona.com for the details.
The Fourth of July weekend came at a time when most the public land in AZ was shut down due to wildfire conditions. Our first plan was to head to New Mexico, specifically the Carson National Forest. Fire restrictions squashed that so we pointed towards Taos, but that too was curtailed. As a final backup planned we rolled the dice and headed towards the Weminuche Wilderness outside of Durango, Co. Even with the current fire going on we got lucky and had an eventful trip.
