A unsuspected day off had me pointing the Subaru East of Phoenix. My destination with Picketpost Mountain Trailhead. This time I wasn't headed up to the top, but rather hiking around it. Besides the trail to the summit of Picketpost Mountain the Arizona National Trail Section 17 begins (or ends) there. With my pack loaded down with a DSLR and plenty of water I headed down the trail. The plan was to run 11 miles to the end and turn around returning to the trailhead. Section 17 of the AZT wraps around Picketpost Mountain and proceeds Southbound through rolling hills and canyons. Along the route you have stunning views of the Superstitions, Picketpost, and other summits. The trail is untraditionally green for an Arizona trail at this elevation. I was hoping to catch some of the wildflower action, but it seems I was just a few weeks early. Maybe a return adventure on two wheels will be required....
