We heard about the lush Aravaipa Canyon a few years ago. Any time we tried to get permits, they were already snagged or the weather wouldn't cooperate. Two months ago we had a opening in our schedule and snagged permits for a overnighter. We finally were headed to the canyon!
Aravaipa Canyon is located within the Galiuro Mountain Range near Mammoth, Arizona. The particular stretch we ere headed to is heavily protected and managed by the Feds and a bunch of volunteers. During our 24 hours in the canyon we managed to meet three volunteers patrolling the area. The area has two entrances, one from the East and one from the West. Both are subject to flooding and occasionally are closed for repairs. To acquire a permit you must visit the website and prepay/print your permits.
