There are a few things in life that I hate more then having to apply sunscreen, but not many. Living in a state that had over 295 sunny days this year means that sun protection is crucial. Long sleeve shirts, a hat, neck buff, and long pants are necessary items to play in the desert year round. On multiple occasions I found my hand suffering from the sun exposure while hiking or running. Luckily Buff was aware of this potential exposure and developed a alternative for protecting your hands from sunburn. The Buff Water Gloves are designed for fisherman, preventing sunburn while out on the water. I purchased a pair and gave them a shot to see if they could be a reasonable alternative sunscreen.
Initial Thoughts- The Buff Water Gloves are made of a nylon and lycra blend that provides a soft, breathable and stretchy material. The particular model I purchased was fingerless, but they do have a full fingered version. The palm of the gloves are coated with a silicon that increases grip in all conditions. The length of the glove up the arm is extended to provide more coverage to the wrist when dynamically moving. Also located at the wrist is a pull tab that helps the gloves slide on. Additionally there is a finger tab that facilitates removal. The material of the gloves provides a UPF rating 50+.
Use- The Buff Water Gloves have found a place in my packs for any summertime excursions. The gloves are virtually weightless and pack down tiny. In those mid afternoon hikes the gloves provide sun protection but are not to warm. Obviously wearing a layer over the skin increases the heat of my hands, but it was slight. The ability to soak the gloves was also appreciated in the heat. The fingerless design allows unparalleled operation of my device for immediate selfies. The silicon grip palms provide amble grip in all conditions. Because the material of the glove is thin I would use caution when climbing up rocks. The gloves do fit tightly so make sure to use the Buff size guide to ensure you get the right fit.
Final Thoughts- The Buff Water Gloves were not a hard sell for me. Anything to eliminate the need to use sunscreen was appreciated. The snug fit, lightweight materials, and UPF rating create the ultimate sun glove that is more durable then others offered by competitors. The Buff quality shines through in the craftsmanship. If you are tired of using sunscreen on your hands or burning them the Buff Water Gloves are a excellent option.
