This is one of those examples of why Colorado is such an amazing state. A ten minute drive outside of Vail lies the trailhead for Deluge Lake Trail and Gore Creek Trail. The Deluge Lake Trail is a relatively short 4.5 miles (one way ) to a beautiful alpine lake that overlooks Sawatch Range. The lake sits at 11,700ft, but don't let the low miles and relatively low elevation (for Colorado standards) fool you; the route manages to climb 3,700ft. The trail begins easy but quickly becomes difficult a few miles in. Steep climbs, some navigating and a lack of air contribute to making this hike a excellent day hike. Although the trailhead was busy, once on trail the challenges thin the herd.
