Quinoa is a delicious, protein rich grain that is easy to prepare and enjoy on the trail. It is nutritionally superior to rice or pasta and can be adapted for multiple different meals. Quinoa does well as a breakfast or dinner. Before we headed to Colorado I did some experimenting with quinoa dishes. The grain also was quick to dehydrate in the dehydrator, which made last minute preparation easy. I prepared the ingredients seperate and then assembled them ahead of time. Using boilable bags I was able to divide and calculate the estimated calories. The recipe below made enough for three large dinners.
In the field add approximately an 1inch of water above the dry ingredients and let sit for ten minutes. The longer the mixture sits the better hydrated it will become. Feel free to experiment with other flavors and ingredients. Let your backcountry chef out to experiment and start making delicious meals.
