Some people give a lot of thought to their electrolyte balance; while others don't even think about it. I fit into the that category. I have confidence in my body and assume that it can manage the balance without supplementary intervention. One place I always seem to be lacking this is in the backcountry. I have tried dehydrating lemons and limes to place in my water to encourage consumption and balance electrolytes. Although this works, it is rather time consuming. I recently decided to try introducing some electrolytes into my routine.
Elete is a simple electrolyte add-in. It has only the necessary ingredients and is not filled with junk sugars or caffeine. Elete make a non-flavored version, as well as a citrus flavored product. Both these come in liquid form but the company makes a pill form, for those who prefer that method. The product I tested was their flavorless liquid version.
First Impressions- Elete is basically just salt water mixed with potassium chloride. As an initial test I purchased the 24.6mL Pocket flask version. The container is a simple plastic squeeze bottle that fits easily in a pocket. The cap doubles as a measuring device. Depending on the amount of liquid you are adding to, you fill the Elete solution to the specified level. The 24.6mL flask makes approximately 10 liters. The company also sells the solution in a 8.3oz; 18.3oz; 32oz and 1 gallon size for commercial applications (think races, fun runs, etc.). Besides the liquid version Elete comes in a pill form or individual packets for easy addition while cycling or running without needing to stop to measure out the quantity.
Use- The first time I used this product was during the Tonto Creek Canyoneering Trip. Initially I figured the product was gimmicky and would not make a noticeable difference. As you hopefully read in the post the trip did not go as planned. We were stuck hiking in the hottest part of the day in the worst spot for this. Two members of the group were negatively affected by the heat. Using the Elete Electrolyte Add-In I noticed no side effects from the weather. I felt strong, hydrated and not water logged. Occasionally I find myself drinking massive amounts of water, but not feeling satisfied. I am assuming that this sensation is my body not acquiring the proper balance it is seeking. Either way the Elete product worked, but I remained skeptical.
I used Elete again on a long run. The temperature was up in the 90's by the time I was 16 miles into the run (I actually ran out of water, something that rarely happens). The electrolytes kept me feeling hydrated but not water logged. The combination of being flavorless and using simple ingredients really resonates with me. Adding it to my water reservoir is easy and makes balancing my electrolytes a painless process.
Final Thoughts- Elete Electrolyte Add-In is an excellent product that makes balancing electrolytes easy. By using a flavorless formula the solution can be used in any liquid or food without effecting the taste. The simplicity of the product packaging, makes application easy. I would recommend this to anyone who lives, works or plays in the heat. The product is easy to transport in the flask size. Using the Elete solution I have experienced nothing but positive results. If you are looking for a solution to balancing electrolytes, (but are not interested in artificial ingredients) Elete Electrolyte Add-In is the answer.
