When your friends get permits for the Grand Canyon, you drop what you are doing and take off. The beauty of living in Arizona is that the canyon is our long weekend playground. Last year a group of us did the Escalante Route dropping down Tanner but coming out Grandview Trail. This time we opted to shorten the trip and come out New Hance Trail. New Hance is 6.5 miles of pure climbing and although slightly shorter then South Kaibab, it makes SK look like child's play.
On a Friday morning we loaded up the Subaru a headed North to the South Rim, coming in from the East entrance. After a few hours driving we parked the car at the Lipan Point parking area and headed down the Tanner Trail. From the Tanner we would take the Escalante Route to New Hance Trail and head back out the canyon. Three days and two nights of Grand Canyon pleasure.
Since the hike was short, we had some time to kill so I headed out exploring the sand dunes around Tanner Beach. Being careful not to crush the Cryptobiotic Crust; I explored and stumbled upon a collection of old cans. I sat there examining the find and pondering how old they were. It always amazes me how somewhere so vast can old so many untold stories.
We were moving to fast after finishing the climb so we opted to take an extended break along the banks of the Colorado. We ended up staying for a hour and half. While there a fellow hiker stopped in and we chatted with him about the 8 day journey he was on. Throughout the rest of the day we leapfrogged him along the route.
After unsuccessfully hitching a ride we began walking down the road trying not to get hit by assholes. After 30 minutes we split up and I continued for a few more miles till a sweet couple from New York (Sarah and (I can't remember his name, sorry)) picked me up and saved me from having to hike another two hours. Fuck all the rest of you that passed me.
If this trip looks interesting or possibly the other trip we did here last year you can find out more info at Hike Arizona under the Taner Trail, Escalante Route, and New Hance Trail. If you want to view the complete photoset, you can find those pics here.
Again special thanks to the lovely couple from New York that decided to pick up a dirty, smelly backpacker while traveling through the Grand Canyon. You guys rock!
