Walk into any store and you are bound to find a pet section filled with toys. Even the grocery store has an area. Sure squeak toys are great, tennis balls will work, and rawhides will provide some entertainment. Rocco (Ultrazona's unofficial mascot) has higher standards then that.
Ruffwear is a dog gear company that provides active canines with high quality equipment. From packs, to leashes, to packable bowls and everything else you would need to make camping/hiking/running/backpacking more enjoyable for your dog. The company's product line has been expanding rapidly and is now crossing over into vehicle restraint systems, beds, and what they call 'human gear'.
Use- Immediately this toy became the preferred toy for our daily fetch routine. While ordinary balls do work, the unexpected path of the Turnup provided an additional challenge. When tossing the toy on a high arch the Turnup hits the ground and does a serious of random bounces. This was primarily used on a low grass surface. I could only imagine that with a harder surface the path would be more sporadic. The Turnup also has a unidentifiable path when tossing at a low angle across the ground. The toy will continue straight and then randomly take a turn, throwing the dog off. The movement from both flights, provides an additional workout for the dog. When attempting to grab the ball in flight, it is common for Rocco to miss. The Turnup will bounce away and at times he is chasing the ball around the field for a substantial amount of time. Additionally when retrieving the Turnup it does occasionally shoot out of his mouth. This was especially an issue when he began mouthing the toy. Although it did provide some additional mileage, you have to be careful that the Turnup does not shoot out of the dogs mouth and into the road or a gutter.
Initial Impressions- The Ruffwear Turnup is a natural rubber toy that and has a soft supple feel to it. Unlike some rubber toys that are hard or course this toy has lots of give. The Turnup is about the size of a tennis ball, but comes to a point on one side. The theory behind the point is that it provides the user with a less predictable bounce, mimicking a wild animal running away. The ball has small grooves all over the surface and has a hole in each end. The hole doubles as a location to stuff treats and creates a whistle sound when in flight. Overall the quality of the toy seems right in line with the rest of Ruffwear's product line.
Final Thoughts- Ruffwear makes some of the best gear in the outdoor industry. High quality, durable materials and excellent customer service contribute to gear Ruffwear produces. The Turnup doesn't let you or your four legged athlete down. The toy has excellent durability, while also maintaining a supple feeling. The design allows for an unpredictable bounce path which contributes to fetch. Rocco is a fan of his Turnup and if the need comes, we will be replacing it with another.
